Nanjing University established the "National Virtual Reality Experimental & Educational Center for Socio-economic Environment System " in 2009, which is one of the first 100 " National Virtual Experimental & Educational Centers" (hereinafter referred to as "the SEES center") approved by the Ministry of Education of China in 2014. The SEES center is located in the new campus of Nanjing University in Xianlin, with about 3500 square meters of experimental teaching and management rooms, 24 professional laboratories of various majors, and fixed assets of instruments and equipment worthy 50 million CNY. The theoretical foundation of SEES center consists of environmental elements, social elements, economic elements, and the simulation of their coupling relationship. The virtual reality technology supporting SEES center as experimental and educational platform for students to deeply understand human activities and resource-environmental effects among socio-economic environment system.
SEES has developed varieties of interdisciplinary VR experimental teaching resources; SEES established a more-than-50-mate team of outstanding experimental teaching and management personnel, supervised by academicians of the Management and Engineering School and national teaching masters, and with well-known experts and professors as the faculty backbone. The team holds solid professional skills, high levels of education and research, and a reasonable balance of positions and structure among faculties. Thus, SEES initially formed a teaching quality supervision system, for better applying its main component, virtual reality experiments.
The SEES provides more than 10 environmental system VR experiments, such as water system quality simulation, air system quality simulation, pollutant emission list construction, material flow analysis, environmental health and risk assessment, environmental economic policy simulation, life-cycle assessment, and other modules. It provides VR experiment platforms for atmospheric science, hydrology, environmental management, environmental planning, environmental system analysis, environmental risk management, environmental policy analysis, environmental economics and other courses. SEES has not only become a VR experimental teaching tool for undergraduate courses, but also for postgraduate students and professors' scientific research; It strongly supports undergraduates’ innovative practical activities, such as College Student Entrepreneur Competition and Challenge Cup.
SEES’s project of "Virtual Reality Experiment of Material Flow Analysis" was selected as the national experimental teaching project in 2018, which is used to help students conduct dynamic VR experiments on resource and environmental issues in the process of regional material cycle. Through systematic simulation of the migration and transformation process of materials in the ecosystem and human society, this project allows students to understand the entire life cycle process of materials from mineral extraction, industrial production, agricultural production, residential consumption, and waste disposal. Participants would systematically grasp the impacts of environment and resources during the material life cycle flows. Moreover, students would intuitively understand the influence of different factors on the material flows. Ultimately the project would fulfill the purpose of teaching and researching related to material flow science.
