The National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Environmental Science and Engineering at Nanjing University was established in 2003 and received approval from the Ministry of Education in 2009. The center is responsible for providing experimental courses to undergraduates across three departments: environmental science, environmental engineering and environmental planning and management. Additionally, the center offers “summer schools”, internships and practices, innovative training and other teaching programs, which cover the specialties of environmental chemistry, environmental biology, environmental engineering, environmental planning and management. The center adopts an open management model to the whole school and society, demonstrating its role in experimental teaching.
Currently, the center has a total laboratory area of over 4,500 square meters, housing more than 1,200 pieces of experimental equipment with a total asset value exceeding 22 million yuan. It offers 16 experimental courses for undergraduates.
Leveraging the strengths of the science and engineering combination in the School of Environment, the center’s teaching philosophy emphasizes the combination of basic experiments with exploratory experiments to cultivate students’ practical skills and ability. The center has established an advanced experimental teaching system and adopted a teaching model of “wide caliber, solid foundation, innovation, and internationalization”. Moreover, The center integrates off-campus research platforms into the professional talent training system by leveraging the national innovation and entrepreneurship demonstration bases of Yixing and Yancheng, as well as the platform enterprises such as Nanjing University Environmental Planning and Design Institute Group Co., Ltd., to build a “two-way enhancement” mechanism for school, which is “campus practice---industry competition---achievement incubation” and “secondary development---industry promotion---achievement feedback”, accelerating the training of high-quality professional talents with application, innovation, and comprehensive qualities.
